A kind and experienced Caregiver/Companion is required by a  Toronto couple with an informal and friendly home in Leaside. The position involves caring for a woman in her late 50’s who suffered a stroke, has aphasia and some mobility issues as a consequence. The person would work in conjunction with the woman’s husband to provide care, companionship and quality of life for a person who is otherwise in good health. The position is full-time, permanent and Toronto-based. There is the potential for travel on occasion. There is a cat and a dog. Vehicle is provided as is a happy and welcoming home environment.

Caregiver/Companion's Responsibilities:

• The Caregiver/Companion will care for the health and companionship needs of the Principal

• The individual will work in conjunction with the Principal’s husband, PSWs and a cleaning lady

• The Principal’s husband is very involved in his wife’s care and seeks a right hand for assistance

• Sharing the responsibility to drive to appointments, outings, visits to friends, etc.

• Tidying the home to include some light housekeeping (there is a cleaning lady), laundry and errands that include grocery shopping

• Accompanying the Principal to medical appointments either alone or with the principal’s husband

• Monitoring other caregivers as they come and go and being able to report on their suitability

• Encourage, assist and champion the Principal to practice techniques learned at physiotherapy 

• Good home cooking is a definite asset

• Assisting with bathing, although the Principal is 90% able to accomplish bathing, dressing and grooming on her own

• Engaging the Principal in activities that are of interest and stimulating such as playing a game of cards or enjoying a movie, making tea, planning and preparing meals together, etc..

• Liaising regularly with the Principal’s husband and coordinating calendars

• Assist Principal and spouse in managing and administering Principal’s medications

• The Principal uses a rollator for walking and a wheelchair for longer distances or trips to the mall. The wheelchair requires lifting and some assembly.

• She manages stairs, but spotting to ensure safety is required

• There is a dog and a cat. The dog enjoys daily walks.

• There will be occasions when the Caregiver/Companion is left alone with the Principal. They will be responsible for the overall care of the Principal during such occasions.

• Conducting errands on an as needed basis

• Willingness to travel on occasion is an asset

• Answering the telephone and taking accurate messages

• Schedule is fluid and will be rectified by way of days in lieu

• This job profile is dynamic and subject to change

• Many of the above responsibilities are shared with the Principal’s husband

Skills and Aptitudes:

• Clean criminal record 

• Driver’s license is a strong asset (ideally G-Level)

• Applicants should be confident driving in the city

• Caregiving experience is important

• Being able to perform home cooking is an asset

• Not afraid to ask questions is important

• Applicants should be kind, patient and understanding

• Employ common sense when faced with an emergency and call the husband or another emergency contact if in doubt

• Willingness to work as the right hand to the Principal’s husband

• Creativity and new ideas are encouraged. Fresh perspectives are welcomed.

• Discreet with a respect for privacy

• This is a non-smoking home

• Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
