Job #165 Homeschool Teacher position with Toronto family

A Toronto family in the Rosedale area of the city is seeking a Homeschool Teacher with a Bachelor of Education Degree for their two school-aged children. The children are aged seven and four (boy and a girl). This position is a one-year contract, which can be renewed depending on circumstances. The schedule is Monday to Friday and a home-based classroom is provided.

There is international travel involved, which may be private or commercial airline depending on circumstances. The position is live-out unless the teacher is travelling with the family and then comfortable accommodations will be provided. The children are bright and energetic. The teacher must be able to adapt to a high-energy environment. There are also nannies with whom the teacher will interface. The focus is the children, their well-being and growth in all respects.

The wish is that the Teacher be able to speak and teach Mandarin, however, this would be considered an asset and not a pre-requisite. All qualified teachers are encouraged to apply.

The position offers a very generous contract-based salary as well as a medical benefits plan.

Applicants must hold current status to legally work in Canada. Sponsorship is not being considered. Applicants must also be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Liaise with a Toronto private school to provide a curriculum that is consistent

• Be firm with children who can be mischievous

• Be able to provide experiential learning as traditional classroom-based learning

• Ability to teach Mandarin

• Well-rounded ability to teach other subjects

• Help foster an ongoing love for learning

• Observe all rules and regulations pertaining to the health and safety of the children

• Assist in the cultivation of healthy social skills

• Help foster confidence in interacting with others while following precautionary COVID guidelines

• Work closely with parents to ensure that the curricular progress is in compliance with both the schools’ and parental wishes

• Keep a daily diary

• Report any incidents to an authorized authority in a prompt and accurate manner

• Establishment of a syllabus that is in compliance with the private school and intended to help the child expand reading and writing skills

• Be prepared to develop hands on (experiential) learning activities particularly as they pertain to the eldest child

• Develop homework assignments

• Travel with the family during the school year

• Overall care, safety and well-being of two children as well as any future children

• Provide a nurturing environment that cultivates interests, manners and emotional support

• Liaise with the nannies as required

• Be firm and kind as needed

• Handling special requests and related duties as required from time to time

Qualifications and Aptitudes:

• Must have Bachelor of Education

• The ability to speak and teach Mandarin is an asset but not a pre-requisite. All non-Mandarin speaking teachers are encouraged to apply.

• Must have G-Level Driver License and be fully insurable (vehicle for work purposes provided)

• Classroom experience is a definite asset

• Ability to follow school curriculum

• Ability to travel with the family with a valid passport with no travel restrictions

• Must have the ability to be both kind and firm when needed

• Must be able to communicate effectively and in a timely manner with parents or persons in positions of authority

• Must have a valid passport with no travel restrictions

• Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability; must be able to work in a self-directed manner with limited oversight

• Formal training in early childhood education is an asset

• Discretion, trustworthiness and reliability are essential — reliably maintains discretion when faced with media intrusion
